Reviewing your approach to IP (post 1 of 5 on Strategic IP Reviews)
More opportunities are lost and risks taken simply for lack of thought than for any other reason.
Isn’t that reason enough?
We have received a lot of great feedback lately about our IP Strategic Review Process and we thought we should explain a little more and get your involvement.
The coming posts will cover:
- How to generate a practical and effective list of IP Action points
- Prioritising your IP Action points
- Analysing your approach to product or service focused IP Strategy
- How to find out what your real IP policies are and what to do about them.
As always, please do have your say as we explore this interesting topic over the next two to three weeks in a series of 4 more blog posts.
We’re particularly keen for you to tell us what you would like to hear on these or other related topics, so please do let us know.

Great themes
this issues relating to strategic management of intellectual property are extremely topical at this time.
For me apart from those four subjects the overall theme of integrated organization on intellectual property in a company is also very interesting.
It concerns issues such as:
– How to build an IP department;
– What communication should be conducted within and outside the company regarding intellectual property;
– Where in the structure of the company must be positioned IP department;
– What rights and obligations must have an IP department;
– How IP department to manage finances related intellectual property;
Have a nice day

Ventsi – thanks very much – if you had to prioritise these, how would you do it and do you think these are the most pressing issues?

This is a great advice for the first time inventors. It also helps if the invention is: (a) analyzed for its positive and negative factors; (b) analyzed for its inherent factors affecting marketability (size, weight, odour, legality); (c) getting marketing/selling assistance from sales people. Still, many good inventions are not going to get market traction even with all the necessary ingredients in place. Logitech io2 digital pen had and has potential on which it never fully capitalized.

Thanks Neal – Did you want to elaborate on the io2 for our other readers?
If you need to prioritize things mentioned by me, the line will be:
1. How to build an IP department- if you know how to build this department this means that there is clarity on key points relating to intellectual property.
2. What rights and obligations must have an IP department- this is essential. Well-defined rights and obligations lead to better organization and better results.
3. Where in the structure of the company must be positioned IP department- if the department is located on the wrong place it will not function properly and will not lead to good results.
4. What communication should be conducted within and outside the company regarding intellectual property- this is related to the preceding paragraphs. The right channel of communication leads to better results. Otherwise, the intellectual property department will work harder. In some companies this activity is not a priority and if no good communication with this department the work failed.
5. How IP department to manage finances related intellectual property-if the above points are fulfilled the next step is proper financial management of intellectual property. This activity requires finances. As for the larger firms and the smaller it is important to determine from which part of the financial budget of the company will be spend money for intellectual property and how it is spent. It’s need accurate reporting.
Have a nice day
