Realized IP Strategy – it's what you did, not what you planned
How closely does your intellectual property track record mirror what you had planned to do? (Ok, this is for those companies which actually have an IP strategic plan.)
Tracking and comparing your ‘Realized IP Strategy’ (what you actually did), to your planned IP Strategy (what you said you would do) is an immensely useful task. Did you adequately allow for unexpected events with sufficient flexibility? Do you have difficulties with implementation – if so why and how canthis be fixed? Was your original plan realistic? Was your plan good enough to take the company where it needed to go?
These are only some of the questions to answer in such a review. What would you add?
If you want to read more – have a look at the work of Henry Mintzberg – the Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies at McGill University who has done some pioneering work on the way that strategy actually forms within organisations. His recent book ‘Tracking Strategies” is well worth reading.
