A simple structure for analysing your IP Strategy

Here’s a simple structure for you to use in analysing your IP Strategy.

There are two main branches to Intellectual Property Strategy: (1) corporate IP Strategy and (2) product specific IP Strategy.

Corporate IP strategy is designed to keep the organisation ‘healthy’ from an IP perspective so that it is well placed to take up opportunities and minimise risks as it continues towards its corporate goals.

Product IP Strategy focuses on the specific instances of engagement with the outside world and is designed to create greater value (eg. brand or patent strategy, broader and longer patent monopolies, etc) and minimise risk on a product by product basis.
